Revainrating 4 out of 5

With patience and the right settings, great shots can be taken!

This is a fully manual lens so it takes some trial and error to get the settings right for good shots. The first tip I learned from asking a question in the product Q&A is to slow down your shutter speed if you're only taking solid black shots - you need to let in more light. The focus ring is very sensitive, so it can be a little touchy. adjustment is a hassle, especially since the lens shakes at the slightest touch - even more so the further you zoom out! Once you get comfortable with the settings and focus, you'll be able to get some good shots. I've only used it to photograph the moon at night at 1300mm and they came out great! I even have a photo of Jupiter with its 4 moons (the image isn't very good, mind you, but the first try impressed me. It's basically a big bright spot with 4 small bright spots around it). ). You will need a good tripod, preferably one with fine adjustment as the weight of the lens caused a lot of slippage on my Revain base tripod. This made it difficult to aim - I had to aim well below the moon, tighten the tripod and hope it bounced back with the moon in the frame. I bought a monopod to attach to my camera in hopes that it would give me better angle control while supporting the weight, but haven't had a chance to try this setup yet. Once it gets warmer outside I can spend more time playing with it to tweak the settings - it's hard to get clear shots when your hands are shaking or you can't feel your fingers!
