I never planned on the kids sleeping in my bed but for some reason now two of them end up in our bed regularly. In the end we just accepted it and took precautions to keep the baby from falling into our bed. I had an awkward eyesore from the railing on the edge of my bed all those years my oldest son was little, and now I'm back in the same position as my youngest son. But when we bought a new, thicker mattress, the beam suddenly didn't match the bed frame anymore! I'm so glad it happened because I've been looking for other options and this bumper is the best solution. I wished, I would have found it many years ago! It serves the same purpose but is far less cumbersome. No, it's not as high as a rail and I think if you have a really acrobatic sleeper they could roll over it (?), but that seems like a good enough deterrent to me.
