Missing instructions caused a misunderstanding of how the timer mode works. I saw the words TIMER, OFF and ON and thought if I had to turn on the timer mode I would have to flip the switch to the ON position. Not correct. It turns out that there are 3 settings: TIMER, OFF and ON. Standard TIMER mode. Just leave it there if you want to use it that way. Then, at the time you want the light to come on, press the button to turn it on and choose the mode you want (let's say =8 instead). After six hours it turns off and then turns on and off at an interval of 18 + 6 hours. Pretty basic, but would be clearer with a quick guide on one sheet.
