Over the years I have bought so many silver earrings of all types; Hoop earrings, hairpins, pendants. I don't wear gold, base metals irritate my skin and I especially like the look of silver. Legally required stamp or engraving on the earpiece itself. You can really feel it when you run your thumbnail over it. Sever any sharp, raised edges that feel like sandpaper is rubbing the inside of my piercing. Oh! Within a day my ears were red and inflamed and I had to return to the spikes for two weeks to give them time to recover. I couldn't figure out why this was happening until I started reading the product description in detail. Why the manufacturer advises the buyer not to wear these earrings in the shower to avoid chemicals, scratches and "excessive sweating". none of these affect the real sterling? Then I delved into product reviews. Why do some buyers complain about corrosion, rust and unusual discolouration? none of which correspond to the real pound sterling? One reviewer even reported that her sterling silver earrings set off metal detectors at airports; some sterling silver will NOT work. Then I remembered. They stamp the purity mark on the earring because that appears to be the only part of the earring that is actually silver! The rest is probably base metal, possibly cheaply plated, but not real sterling silver. This is a kind of sleight of hand on the part of the sellers. They can claim to sell "sterling silver earrings" because the piece they are stamped on is actually sterling silver. Then, when someone has doubts about the rest of the item—rust, corrosion and discoloration, TSA issues at the airport—the sellers can refer to the "PRODUCT SPECIFICATION” table, which simply states that the items are made of "metal.” ...It's vile and evil, and I wish Revane had a better handle on potential scams like this, but "be careful not to steal", right? 😡And whether the earring is sterling silver or cheap base metal, the otherwise inexplicable decision to engrave the earrings makes them unacceptable to me. Obviously some buyers think differently as they give these earrings high marks. As for me, I will keep looking for genuine sterling silver hoop earrings that will NOT chafe my ears. Act accordingly.
