Review on Philips MRV640 Magnavox DVD Recorder by Nathan Akers

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good for some things

I've had this unit for about a month and haven't had any hardware/operational problems. I use it to record via analog cable and found the 3 hour recording speed looked identical to the source material. I record with Memorex +RWs which work great and play great on my Samsung DVD player. I'm using a non-original remote control, so I can't vouch for the one that came with it. The OSD menu is pretty easy to master and the user manual has the information you need. Please note that this device does not have an optical audio output, only a coaxial digital output. Otherwise, it has a good selection of inputs and outputs. It's useless as an MP3 player as there is no GUI menu system for selecting folders on your MP3 disc - you can only go forward or backward in a track. Sometimes this device seems slow to respond to commands, but since this is my first DVD burner, most others can do the same.

Pros
  • Best in its niche
Cons
  • Some difficulties
