As the name suggests, I've been able to use this with both a not-too-old SATA drive that has failed and a really old PATA/IDE/ATA (large tape drive). I successfully retrieved a bunch of data from both and was surprised at how fast it went. I migrated about 1.5 terabytes from a SATA drive in a few hours. This drive didn't respond to anything else, so it was money well spent. However, I had to orient the drive and adapter vertically - the connection is not as secure as I would like. I also had to remove something from the IDE drive to make it work; I think it was a jumper? So be aware that this may be required. Overall, I am very satisfied and can only recommend this adapter.
