EASY UPGRADE FROM EXISTING TO DOUBLE

My old house had a large single PetSafe door installed in an unair conditioned room. I never cared too much about how it was sealed. I installed one in my new home where it opens into an air conditioned space and often noticed that the wing was not connected to the bottom magnet and a small breeze kept it open. I started looking for models with two doors to stop drafts, but they were all different sizes. Since I had a door that was cut specifically for this particular door, I didn't want to start cutting to fit a different model. MY DECISION - I bought a second PetSafe door. I removed the outer trim ring from the existing unit (the one without the guard) and installed half of the new door guard on the outside. It works great! Because the aluminum frame is 4 pieces of extruded aluminum held together by 4 corner brackets crimped in place, the corners of the frame will flex a bit. In a typical single leaf installation, the outer skin is placed inside the inner skin where it covers the wood portion of the door. My dual valve setup, where the frame is held together with a flex, allowed the second valve frame to flex a bit and slip out of the original valve frame. I had to widen the holes for the 4 plastic mounting bolts - there are bushings on the outer ring that fit into the frame to drive the bolts in, so the holes in the frame without valves are larger than the frame with valves. The 5/16" bit did the trick. I will say that sometimes one wing doesn't seat properly and the other does. This only happens about 5-10% of the time, but it still breaks traction on the other wing, causing it to The other 90-95% of the time, both doors will stay on the bottom magnet as intended, and the upgrade costs less than $50 and required no trimming, which is a lot better than $150-250 for a double sash. Model that I would have to change the existing hole size.
