Handmade Japanese Match Bowl Red DoMatcha

This is my first chawan I bought from DoMatcha. Chawans are used in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony and are intended for drinking matcha; finely ground green tea powder, whisked with hot water. Before purchasing this chawan, I drank matcha from either a wide soup bowl or a cereal bowl. I have to say that it is more pleasant to drink matcha from a traditional vessel. Chavans come in many shapes and sizes, from elegantly simple to rough and mundane. I chose this one because I haven't seen many with red frosting. It contrasts beautifully with the bright matcha green once blended and has a pattern intricate enough to keep the eye interested. The patina of the glaze is smooth but with a light texture for a comfortable touch. The bowl does not get too hot, has a good weight and the flat "foot" prevents it from tipping over easily. The inside is smooth with no protrusions, making it easy to mix the matcha powder. Slightly higher and thinner than most, this style is meant for winter as it retains heat more effectively. But I will use it all year round. If you're new to matcha and don't want to break the bank, this attractive chawan should be on your shortlist. Do yourself a favor and grab a bamboo whisk (chasen) and good quality matcha to mix it up.
