They will NOT prevent roses, bougainvillea or other embroidery plants from getting up the sleeves. I haven't tried it with a knife and I'd be crazy if I did! The so-called "one size fits all” is wrong. I have lean but muscular arms and they were very loose on me. My husband has them on and they fit him but he is also slim. The fabric resembles the knit of a sweater. Certainly not made of Kevlar and impregnated with an impermeable substance. I should have returned but threw them away instead. I wouldn't recommend it if you don't like wasting $$.
