Review on Hecef 6 Inch (15 cm) Acacia Wood Magnetic Knife Strip - Efficient Holder for Organizing & Displaying Various Metal Items, in Brown by Anna Crane

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Ideal for 4 " to 5 " knives.

PROS: Attractive knife holder made from beautiful hardwood with food safe finish, handy 6 inch size for small areas. CONS: Only holds shorter knives satisfactorily. Every time you pull out a knife, it scratches the surface of the wood, leaving thin cuts in the wood; multiply that by the number of knife removals per day and imagine the surface area of that knife strip in a few weeks. Wiggle if not using your own gear. CONCLUSION: I bought this bar to hold 2 knives, a small serrated cutter and a bread knife. The small knife works great but the bread knife just glides across the ledge and barely stops. I can imagine someone moving quickly around the kitchen and smacking it across the strip, only for the knife to be placed with more force than the magnets can overcome and drop the long knife; maybe a quick instinct to catch him might work if I don't like the idea I'm left with. The rear mount on this bar also seems poorly thought out. You get screws with drywall anchors that don't work, as well as larger diameter, larger head screws. In my opinion, a sliding guide should be used. Half could be bolted to the tree, and then the other half could be installed where the holder was needed. After placing the rail on the area of the surface where you want the strip, simply insert the block into the guide and lock the strip in place to keep the strip in place. Too trendy? Then make sure you have the right equipment. The holes could be a lot smaller for a 6 inch knife holder. EDIT 11/20/18: I couldn't use the block as intended (horizontally) as it was placed under a tree with cylindrical magnets in the center line (long knives just don't stick), but there weren't any cheaper options. The mounting hardware that came with it was practically an afterthought, so I bought my own and played around with the arrangements until I got what you see in the photos. The manufacturer should change the way it is mounted. I don't want the knife block to NOT move when it needs to hold sharp objects in the kitchen. It's also worth noting that as predicted the trim is gone, you can point out the spots where the knives stay. The block requires some maintenance to keep it clean, as does the cutting board.
