I've overseen technology throughout the school for over a decade. For my professional and personal use I only buy WD Black hard drives and in all these 12 years I have literally never had a problem or failure with any of them. So that's all I keep buying. I used to buy other brand discs but we had problems with them. There's nothing worse than a hard drive crash that takes all your data with it. Of course, we usually have backups, but there's always that nagging feeling that restoring from a backup will lose something, no matter how many times the backup is done. Add to that the stress, frustration and loss of productivity when the device is offline. Yes, these drives are more expensive than many other hard drives. However, when you factor in the dramatic increase in reliability and durability, they are more than worth the extra money in my experience. Of course, there's no doubt that the occasional erroneous lock can occur, or one that just fails, but in my experience we've never encountered one. They also come with a 5-year warranty and a high MTBF rating, which is of course very reassuring. Note: Unless you are backing up your data on a disabled drive error or malware that has removed your data. In my experience there are two types of people in the world: those who have lost data and those who will lose data.
