Review on Enhanced Tekpower TP7244L Analog Multimeter With Backlight and Durable Protective Holster - 7 Functions and 20 Ranges by David Fields

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The analog scale is "practical " for "oldtimers " like me.

I'm old enough to have grown up with analog multimeters. I have had digital multimeters for many years. They work well but I miss the d'Arsonval movement and its instant response. Analog gauges (like this one) are familiar and quite sensitive to people like me. Being retired I don't need a 'working' multimeter and while the Simpson 260 is probably the 'best analog' meter out there I just can't justify the cost. This unit: TP72444L, does everything I need, seems solid enough and is a fraction of the cost of a Simpson 260. I'm back to the good old days of test lead resistance calibration. The dial is large enough to be read, and a mirror behind the needle (a feature found on the best analog gauges) can be used to eliminate parallax. I took readings straight away on most scales and this meter compares well to my best DMM in terms of accuracy. The analogue meter with its D'Arsonval mechanism is also an amazing "teaching" aid in understanding the theory of electricity. These concepts are harder to understand just by looking at the digital display. I always like to have a case for my counters. As this is an analog gauge I decided to make a small investment in a 'hard case', I found one (at Revain) that fits well (see photo). At Revain, this case is labeled "Hermitshell Hard EVA Travel Case Fits DOSS SoundBox Color Portable Wireless Speakers with Bluetooth 4.0".
