Not sure what the first guy did but if you are a mechanic they are worth every penny! I checked out the Lisle's but they aren't heavy and everyone complained about the leverage which was squeezing and digging in the hands. Center arm is 3/16" thick, outer arms on opposite jaws are 1/8" thick. The handles are comfortable and have great leverage. Works like channel locks and simply slides out the end of the cable. I used to cut a bad cable, but you still had to clamp a vise, hold on to a frame or something strong, and use a chisel to knock the end out -NOT ANY MORE (I would still cut the cable if I replaced it would to save time - but now you can easily pull the end out)! As for connecting the end of the cable, I'll probably never use this tool for that - just plug the end into the connector and depress the parking brake pedal, it will seat itself (of course make sure it's properly installed before proceeding ) . This tool gently pushes the end through the notch in the connector.
