Review on πŸ“Ά Enhanced Stratux Basic Kit with Amplified Antennas by Mike Travers

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Easy assembly, reliable performance on hot planes.

This kit was very easy to put together. No soldering, just connect the parts together. Getting the antenna cables back into place is a little tricky, but it won't cause any major problems if you're willing to take a few minutes to get it right, rather than just being clumsy and trying to to force things. I lifted it up today for the first test. I attached it to the Super Cub's rear window with a suction cup so it would fly with the glider tow. I also have a 20Ah USB battery and a phone strapped to my knee. The day was in the low 80s Fahrenheit (26-29 degrees Celsius). The fan kept the device at about 55Β°C for about five hours of flight and standby, I left it on the whole time. The battery indicator (five LEDs) hasn't dropped from the full setting, so I think this battery is redundant. The connection to the ADS-B gates from a nearby powered aircraft was that reliable gliders can't stand ADS-B, so don't expect them to show up!) Similarly, I got (although I wasn't asked) NEXRAD Weather. I didn't get a chance to try the AHRS feature as the nature of this flight really required a look out the window. However, the included software can actually provide a fallback orientation indicator (assuming you turn your phone/tablet/whatever screensaver off) and some sort of pseudo-radar showing the location of the ADS-B pins. For the price, this isn't an issue for those who want non-certified ADS-B and real-time weather data without an XM subscription for added situational awareness. If you really don't like the idea of assembling it, there are pre-assembled versions here for about $80 more. I think it's still less than half the cost of comparable devices.

Pros
  • Highly rated by testers for grip and durability
Cons
  • Not as thick as other picks
