It Doesn't Work - Backpacks, Bags & Accessories

I have used this bag on many rural hikes in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. The bag has served me well, but I have never tested it up to this point. A large black bear made a 4-5 inch hole in my pocket while tied to a tree. The bear was unable to remove the pouch from the tree or open it from above, but with minimal effort it pulled all the pieces of food through the hole it made. We listened to the bear on the bag and watched it snatch all the food out of the bag for 20-30 minutes. The bear wasn't aggressive towards us, but he wasn't afraid that we all tried to drive him away from there. After he left the first time we headed out and cleaned up all the rubbish we just had to burn to get rid of the smell. I left the sack (smeared with bear saliva and food crumbs) tied to the original tree to pack the next day. The bear returned to the bag once after we cleaned everything but didn't linger long after realizing there was nothing left. I contacted the company with my story and showed them the pictures and also requested a refund or replacement. In response they sent a new bag which I didn't want to use anymore after what happened to the first bag. Luckily I was still within a year of returning to REI where I bought the original bag. While the company basically did everything they could to get it right, I would be much happier with a refund directly from them. I would certainly never entrust my overnight stay to any of these and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
