When I ordered these I was thinking of using them to make self watering garden containers; but my god, when they arrived I just couldn't bring myself to slaughter them like that. These are really good containers and my wife certainly put them to better use than I did: they became a place to store her jewellery. It only took her half a second to claim it when I told her I wasn't going to use it. For those unfamiliar with self-watering containers, this idea is nothing new; In fact, my mother had a couple of flower pots that she bought in the 1940's and 1950's that were designed to water themselves. The pots were clay with a bowl reaching about a third of the way to the rim of the pot. The whole item was fired from a single piece of clay and there were holes in the bottom of the pot but inside the bowl to allow the water from the bowl to be drawn into the soil in the pot to keep it from drying out. Of course, they weren't truly self-watering, as you had to keep an eye on the water level in the bowl to avoid spilling the water. Well, today's automatic watering boxes work on the same principle and are just as effective as the pots of old. They also require the same care to keep the water level high enough. If anything, these containers have been spared the pain and disfigurement associated with cutting and/or drilling holes for use in such a project. At least for now. I may order another set in the future and complete the necessary steps to create a container garden. Now, my wife is happy she was with them, which means I'm happy she was with them.
