To be honest I was quite skeptical about using roof deicing cords. I had my doubts that they would actually work. So far I'm very impressed. We've had a terrible snowstorm here in the Northeast and these cables are doing a great job of keeping the gutters ice free so they can drain properly. These cables aren't the cheapest on the market, but they do have some unique features. The biggest thing I love is that you can layer them on top of each other. I wanted to do this with the end loops in the gutter and the last piece of wire going through the bottom of the gutter. This ensures that there is always a path for meltwater. The cheaper ones don't let you touch wires to each other. It's not very cold here yet, so I've yet to see how well they perform when a big snowstorm hits us, followed by an arctic freeze. This situation has repeatedly led to uncomfortable ice dams. So far I'm very happy with this purchase.
