As this item took a long time to get to me and was previously in stock, the first thing I wanted to do was give it a thorough wash. Spilled water directly, okay, that's fine. We can only hope that the rice doesn't fall out of the top part where there is a clear plastic window as there is a hole. When I went to get it from the sink, I found that a lot of water had gotten into the base. As far as I know, this thing doesn't disassemble to get into the base. I was able to drain it but not dry it out so hopefully it doesn't get nasty. In general, I would like to choose a different brand. I haven't been able to test it with rice yet, but the fact that the water got somewhere didn't deter me.
