I am currently running at New Balance and wanted a specific hiking shoe. When I discovered that New Balance has specific hiking shoes, I thought I'd try one of these models. Bought the 1165 because it had good reviews and wasn't as clunky/bulky as some of the others. I just received these shoes and have ridden 15.5 miles in the past few days. I didn't find them to be that comfortable at first, but they seem to get more comfortable as I put on more miles. This differs from their running shoes as they don't seem to need breaking in. In terms of cushioning, these shoes are stiffer so not as soft as I thought they would be. Not necessarily bad, just not what I expected. My guess is that the harshness is partly due to the foam rubber outsole feeling firmer than a running shoe. The insert and midsole hug my feet so I feel more comfortable on every outing. I wear medium shoes, "D", and my feet are on the narrow side of medium. For me there is enough room in the width and height of the toe box, but if you have a wider foot width that can be a problem. The length was fine for me and I had no problem going up a half size as some reviews have mentioned. I would buy this shoe again at any time. I would also like to try the 1365 as it looks like ground contact EVA so it feels less hard and softer.
