Revainrating 5 out of 5

Much better than expected

Received this player as part of a Revain promotion. At the time of purchase I had no intention of buying a Blu Ray player and knew very little about BD players other than that they have better picture quality and cost more money. But when Revain offered to give me this BD player (free) and ship it (free) just to buy the LCD TV I wanted to buy. I thought only a fool would turn down a deal like that. So I bought it. It's a bit strange as I didn't have to pay anything for the device or shipping. Then I saw all the negative reviews and felt a lump in my stomach. Back then, almost 50% of the reviews were bad. Most of the reviews were due to players locking their player while updating the firmware. There were other minor issues, but the most common was freezing. So I was afraid to get this device even if it was free. Then it came. I decided to do everything quickly and reduce the pain (e.g. tear off the patch) and immediately block the device. just out of the box. So I connected it to my TV and the internet and told it to update the firmware. I didn't realize the firmware update would take so long. 28 minutes 34 seconds. and I have fairly fast internet (5 MB DSL). It took so long that I fell asleep at the sight of the progress bar and woke up from my sleep. don't know where i was and the update is not ready yet. Then the most interesting began. Other reviews showed that the device would not turn on after a firmware update. After completion of the firmware. I expected it to be a brick. But. I pressed the power button on the remote control and it came alive. Hm. What the hell. Since then I have updated the firmware twice. Each time I expected it to be my last. I'm always pleasantly surprised that the thing still works. I don't know if I have the magical unity or if I'm just doing it right. I read in the manual that you can't update the firmware when the drive is in the tray. This is how most people rate their players. Good. Now for the actual review: setup is very easy with the HDMI cable. The only thing I don't like about HDMI is that you still need a cable to your sound system if you want surround sound - TVs only put out stereo output on their digital audio connection for inputs coming from HDMI (es is a bit of a silly Hollywood limitation). It kind of defeats the purpose of HDMI. In addition, you can connect HDMI to the receiver with HDMI switching. But in my case I connected a Samsung BD player to a Samsung LCD via ANYNET+. It is not clear if the receiver would allow me to control the BD player with the TV remote if connected like this. Anyway, I don't have an HDMI switchable receiver. so i have to buy one. and I have 4 HDMI components (XBox, MediaPlayer, HD-Tivo, BD-Player) and most receivers only have 2 or 3 HDMI inputs. So I would also get an external HDMI switch. Too bad there is no box that only toggles HDMI and separates video from audio. But. I was distracted. Picture. it is excellent! I compared a few DVDs that played on my $300 DVD player to the same DVD that played on my FREE! DB player. I thought digital is digital. But the picture from the BD player looked better than from the DVD player. I do not know why. I don't care ANYNET+ I've read/heard people complaining about this. I don't know what to complain about. For me it was intuitive. It would be nice if there was a "BD" button on the remote and that's all you have to do to select the BD player, there is no such button. But selecting a BD player from the "Source" list is certainly easier than what I'm used to. And selecting a BD player from the "Source" list will turn on the BD player. So I don't even need to use the BD remote for anything. However. BD remote control and TV remote control are almost the same. YouTube Gadget. is about 95%. I was looking for something that would pair YouTube with my HDTV. This happens about 95% of the time. YouTube gadget on BD player is much better than YouTube widget that comes with TV. Even low-resolution YouTube videos look better on a gadget with a BD player. and certainly better than on my 24" monitor. I have three problems with the YouTube gadget. 1) Although you can link your YouTube account to the YouTube viewer, you don't get a list of new videos from your subscription list. To these To view videos, you must either set up search patterns on your BD player or use your computer to mark these new videos as "favorites" BD player subscription list 2) Apparently there is no navigation within the video. Some of the videos I watch are interactive - they have something to click on them YouTube BD Player gadget can only do 3) There are several YouTube-like video sites that play videos in the same formats as YouTube It would be nice , if bd player would allow you to choose the site you get video streams from But I'm sure that's easier said than done Pandora, NetFlix, BlockBuster: I'm a Pandora subscriber and in love with the intern etradio concept. But it's a little strange listening to internet radio on a 55-inch LCD that doesn't have any visualizer attached. I canceled my NetFlix subscription a few years ago after receiving 8 unplayable DVDs in a row. It didn't impress me. also their video streaming. When playing on my home computer over 5MB DSL, I had a lot of pauses and pixelated frames. And there were a couple of movies where I was almost finished and it just got stuck and had to start over. So I'm not sure how many NetFlix and BlockBuster Gadgets I'm going to use. But watching BlockBuster trailers is amazing! I watched the Land of the Lost trailer. Picture details and sound are amazing. USB Content: The LCD TV also has a USB port. Oddly enough, the TV can play almost any file format I could put on a USB stick. On the other hand, the BD player doesn't seem to play anything. I put a homemade DVD in VOB and ISO format on a USB stick. The BD player has not understood both. I was trying to play a video I downloaded from YouTube onto a USB drive. they didn't play. I can't remember any other formats I've tried. but it's good that I have a USB on the TV. and MediaPlayer with USB connection. I'm kind of wondering what USB ports are for (other than firmware updates). After all. I would certainly be willing to pay $199 ($189 off) for this device as it exceeds my expectations in this price range. Nice. I had no issues with freezing or unplayable media (which wouldn't play on other devices).
