Review on πŸŽ₯ Rode VideoMic GO: Lightweight On-Camera Microphone with Rycote Shockmount - Professional Sound for Filmmakers by Andrew Woodruff

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Decent mic for beginners

Fair warning, I make videos as a hobby and I'm NOT a professional. So some of my issues may be my fault and not the mic's fault. I mainly shoot interview-style videos. I also use Video MicGO with a Canon 80D DSLR. The reason for the 3 stars is that the sound quality is definitely better than the camera's internal microphone, but there are many problems (mostly minor ones).1. You have to be close to the object, for example very close. Beyond a few meters (at bounty) the noise quality degrades drastically. I knew this before buying but that was because I read the reviews. The company did not provide any information about the distance that the microphone can withstand. Sometimes I shoot something outside of the optimal range and the difference in sound is noticeable. But I will say that this can be fixed in montage.2. There is always constant static noise after filming. This is usually very boring, but the sound always has to be edited. Noise is not a breeze as I'm shooting in a quiet room. Static can be minimally or completely removed using the noise reduction software that likely comes with every video editing app. To add problem #2, the microphone is sensitive to a lot of interference. I need to turn off WiFi on the camera, keep my laptop away, etc. When WiFi is enabled on the camera, the aforementioned noise goes beyond the workable point and the audio suffers badly. Again, the reason for the 3 stars is that it's not a bad mic overall. It's lightweight, you don't need an external power supply, it's not the camera's built-in microphone. The sound is good, you just have to let it work for you and adjust it properly. You will most likely need to edit all of the audio unless you don't mind a little crackling static noise.

Pros
  • Built-in Rycote Lyre shock mount protects video mic from shock and vibration
Cons
  • Frequency
