I'm not sure why there are so many bad reviews about it. I realize this is probably different from the previous model and difficult to change, but it's still a great diaper pail. Some reviews complain that the locking mechanism at the top of the bag won't close after multiple diapers are in the bag. . Your bag is not properly adjusted. With the refill ring, you should tie a knot at the bottom of the bag, making sure a few inches of the bag ABOVE the knot touches the bottom of the bucket. (SEE PHOTO.) Then the weight of the diapers will fall to the bottom of the bucket and not press on the locking mechanism. The pouch won't go to waste because you're still just cutting off the portion that's filled with diapers, then pulling the excess to use next time. Some reviews complain that it is odorless. Invariably, the baby always poops in the first diaper after I change the bag to the bucket. I put the dirty diaper in the bucket anyway, knowing it will sit there for a while before being emptied again. It never smells. When I change the bag, I throw the used item in our kitchen trash can (where it stays for a while), and then the garbage smells like Arm & Hammer bags, not dirty diapers. I like that both the pouches and disc help control odor. Buying a replacement ring from another brand could also be part of the problem. Some reviews complain that you have to empty it frequently. While I don't have an odor problem, I can imagine that the likelihood of a used diaper smelling increases with each passing day that you don't empty it. I'm glad I have to change the bag every few days so the smell doesn't become an issue. Some reviews complain that the diaper has to be pushed through the fastening mechanism. Get over it. You still wash your hands after changing your baby's diaper. Some reviews complain that you have to press the lid of the container after putting on the diaper. So the bucket closes the locking mechanism. If you press down on the lid, it can be closed with more force. I'd rather drop the lid and get a good seal than not closing the lid and risking a dirty diaper smell. This is my first diaper pail but I use it at my friends house when I'm babysitting their kids. They have one of those old school variations where you put the diaper in this little cup and then pull the handle up/down to move the diaper into the bucket. You have to press a little more (the lever against the lid) and that's where the smell comes through. (Although Arm & Hammer isn't affiliated with it, so maybe that's a difference too.) Overall, I think this is a really great diaper pail. It's really low profile and can cost a few dollars more than its competitors, but if I had to buy a diaper pail again, I'd still buy it.
