These are exactly what I was looking for and they don't even show through on the brush! They're not entirely black, but more of a dark charcoal color, which is actually pretty cool. And when I use a brush, it blends a lot better than the markers I'm used to. The lack of a star is odd, but it's due to the product itself and because the pens' names have definitely faded over time. I need to draw type numbers when it's hard to know which is which (see image). But I love the way they work - it just feels like they could label them better!
