Cleaning the Bonavita Coffee Maker I'm writing this review so everyone knows how to properly clean the Bonavita coffee maker. I use my second Bonavita coffee maker and one of the things I found wrong is that it doesn't produce hot water when it gets dirty but produces a lot of steam. This means that you get a lot of steam during the brewing process and very little (strong) coffee at the end. I also used URNEX and CLR cleaning powder. Both are great for cleaning, but they don't always solve the steam problem. Just recently I cleaned it up and figured out how to get the Bonavita back to normal. First, follow the directions on the cleaning powder or solution that came with your coffee maker. Once you're done brewing this solution, it's time to rinse. Typically you will need two more full tanks of fresh water to fully flush the Bonavita. At this point you might think you're done, but you're only halfway there. To really flush out the solution, I figured I'd just put the coffee maker in the sink and rinse the container out of the faucet. At this point, I've discovered that you can remove the entire top of the coffee maker by gently running your fingers along the top as you lift it off the tank. After you have done this, you can place the device in the sink under the tap and direct the jet of water through the plastic steam pipe into a vessel for heating. Once it's full, turn it upside down in the sink to drain it again. If you're like me, you'll see a lot of black and white particles in the sink. Repeat this process until you stop coming out. At this point, remove the plastic shower head that snaps to the underside of the top shower head. Slowly run your fingers across the shower head and separate it into two sides. Also clean all of this part. Now proceed in reverse order, assemble the shower head and slowly place the attachment back onto the coffee maker. Dry the device with a towel and rinse again with a pot of water. You should see your brew cycle run with no steam (to the end) and very quickly. Give it a try, I think you'll be glad you found the extra time.
