Review on NRG Innovations SRK-250BK/CG Quick Release Kit (Black Body / Chrome Gold Ring) by Richard Eledge

Good. with some caveats

I first bought a fake Gen1 type NRG quick release kit off ebay for about $30. After about half a season of racing at the track (6-7 HPDE weekends) the connection became lame so I went back and decided to buy the original. For track purposes, especially when wearing gloves, the larger trigger grip area is much better than the Gen1 or Gen2 grip area. I see no reason to upgrade to 2.8 or 3.0 gens as you don't really get any additional benefits. I think the 3.0 generation can even get in the way in some cases when using a very small diameter steering wheel. The positive grip when turning the steering wheel is very firm and I could not detect any noticeable play. It works well with NRG steering wheel spacers. Now my two comments. There are no installation instructions. This isn't usually a problem, but the kit comes with some "spare parts" that I was interested in, but no installation instructions saying what they might be for. I didn't use any of those (a few thin spacers and an aluminum collar). - Trigger is tiny! The fact that you have to both press the release button and pull the latch makes emergency unlocking significantly more difficult than a collar-latch only knock-off kit. If you add a wider collar with "wings" for easier unbuttoning, what do you think about leaving a tiny button that needs to be pressed as well? the button should either be a switchable option or be significantly larger and ideally accessible from at least two opposite sides - in the event of an accident on the track the steering wheel can be in any position and having the button in just one place can result in these in certain positions of the steering wheel cannot be reached or can only be reached with great difficulty. For the price of this item (which is higher than most track-ready quick release bindings), I expect clear instructions and a more thoughtful outlet design.

Pros
  • Nice
Cons
  • Mostly ok but...
