Daniel Smith's color and shade choices for the Ultimate Mixing Set are great. However, as many have noted, the box is very poorly framed. It seems intended only to hold color, no built-in palette. Practical functions are completely missing. I don't know what the DS development team was thinking. Fortunately, there are workarounds. In my case I used an extra set of 12 Koi colors that I had. The lid of the DS box can be removed in no time at all. The thin koi color bowl is glued to the box with double-sided adhesive tape and can also be easily removed with a flick of the wrist. The DS box without a lid fits perfectly in the Koi box. See photo. Too bad DS didn't release the Ultimate Mixing Set half panels in this palette.
