Review on Sena Motorcycle Bluetooth Headset Communication System: Enhancing Rider Connectivity and Safety by Juan Gomez

Revainrating 1 out of 5

It looks like a beta version of a product that isn't ready for mass release yet.

I'll start by saying that I'm a very tech-savvy person. I'm also a technology pioneer. I do a lot of research before making a purchase, and I read the instructions carefully before moving on to most new technology purchases. I have an older Sena, SMH-10, and when I heard about the release of the 50S and all that technological advancement, Wi-Fi enabled charging cable, Bluetooth 5.0, Mesh 2.0, upgraded speakers, etc. I couldn't wait you until you buy this model. to make it work as advertised. Here are the issues I encountered that led to my solution: 1. I took everything out of the box and read the instructions and started charging my new communicator. I download the app and connect to my iPhone. The app said there was a firmware update, so I tried connecting the Wi-Fi adapter to my home internet following the instructions. No connection is established. I tried several times over the next few days. I even watched some Sena videos online but couldn't get it to work as advertised. I called Monday morning and spoke to a Sena representative. He told me to make sure my WiFi is running on 2.4GHz (obviously 5GHz doesn't work) and make sure my WiFi doesn't have any special characters. -Fi password. I find it unusual that a modern device other than 5GHz can't recognize any of the special characters in my password. I made changes but still couldn't connect it to update the firmware. I went to a friend's house to try his Wi-Fi with the same settings and nothing. I even tried my 2.4GHz MiFi device with no success. I refused to update the firmware.2. I installed the device in my helmet and made my first phone call. The incoming audio is amazing, clear, crystal clear, but when I spoke I heard crackling and static and it was difficult for the person on the other end of the line to understand me. I removed everything from the helmet, made sure all connections were tight and clean, and reinstalled. It seemed to help a little, but not fully and certainly not at the level I would expect from a modern premium device. We went for a ride with a group of other drivers. Everyone had cardo communicators, but I learned this before purchasing the item and knew we could communicate over the web. Or so I thought. We couldn't communicate at all via the internet. So we somehow connected via Bluetooth. I connected for about 30 seconds and then disconnected. Within 30 seconds of connecting, I could tell the static tone I was transmitting was similar to my phone calls. So instead of talking to other drivers, I listen to music. My music sounded great, sounded really great. I had high hopes for a premium purchase of what I consider a premium device. Based on my week of ownership, I have a feeling this is a beta device that clearly has potential, but just doesn't. A while?

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
