I have used a Cobra 19 DX-IV before but found it a bit noisy and blurry. I checked out the Uniden 520xl but wasn't overly impressed. After reading some reviews about the Midland 1001lwx I decided to give it a try. This radio is far superior to the Cobra 19. The sound is much cleaner and it actually seems like the range is a bit better, but I'm not sure. The noise gate is much better than the Cobra 19, while the Cobra is more like an on/off noise gate and the Midland fades out the sound around the noise gate setting. This makes the sound much more pleasant to hear than constant stuttering when transmissions are close to noise-cancelling. The automatic noise limitation also seems to work well and hides not only ignition noises but also radio reception noises. Weather channels work fantastic, very clear; You can press the microphone to change the channel, and press the CB/PA button to increase the volume. The LCD display is also much more intuitive, you get a much better visual indication of reception strength and it's very easy to read at a glance. All in all a great radio and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a compact, state of the art CB radio.
