My lid won't close.

I installed a new filter on my fan but when the cover is replaced it will not snap into place. I managed to jam the lid a third time (each time someone had to pull the filter out of the lid as it got stuck) but the fan wasn't working properly and still gave me the "replace filter" code. They are slightly different from the original filter and I'm wondering if that's the problem. These will be returned.
