If you are looking for a sealed gasket for your small block Ford look no further. I have an SBF with AFR aluminum heads and Ford Racing aluminum valve covers. When I rode these heads (from E7TE iron heads) I rode these valve covers and some Earl valve cover gaskets. Earl Pads were very similar in design but not the same. They had a steel core with a rubber seal on each side. Like these FP washers, they had thicker washers in each screw hole, allowing you to tighten the cover screws without over-compressing the washer. The problem with earl pads is that they started leaking shortly after installation. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why they were leaking and was ready to switch to a different lid when I discovered the problem. The rubber seal on one of the seals had come loose from the steel core. I would have thought that the pressure of unscrewing the cap would have pushed the rubber against the steel core, but that didn't happen. When I received the FelPro seal and examined it, I found that the seal was more durable than the Earl seal that I was replacing. The Earl had thin rubber grommets on each side where the FP was much wider. The width of the rubber seal is approximately the same as that of the steel core. This gives the sealing rubber not only greater strength, but also greater surface area for engaging the core and surface area for sealing with the head. the others had no problems.) The point is that the FP seal is better made and costs less. Win-win no matter how you look at it. The great advantage of this type of gasket is that no sealant is required and its use is discouraged. This simplifies assembly and, if necessary, disassembly (I have strong tappets, so I have to pull on the covers to adjust the valves). Just make sure your surfaces are flat and clean and lay them down. the "head" side and the "cover" side to the FP seal. You won't notice unless you look. Most SBF VC seals can be installed any way you like, so use caution when using them.
