D300s or D90 or D700

D300s bought a few months ago. I like it. I love how it works and I get great shots. I had a choice between the D90 and this model, but what made me go for the more expensive camera was the full compatibility with older Nikon lenses. I have several old lenses, even an AI converter, and it works great with them. You can store all your old lenses (AI or AIS) in its memory and it will fully work with those lenses - except for autofocus of course. Old autofocus lenses work 100%. Unless you have older Nikon lenses, you'll have to decide for yourself whether the additional features of the D300 are worth the money. I think Ken Rockwell is right when he suggests you upgrade to the D700, but I had a hard time justifying the extra $1,000. (The D700 has a full-frame sensor.) As this is my first DSLR, I've had to get used to the fact that if you zoom in too far, the images won't come out perfectly sharp. You see square pixels, not a smooth line. In hindsight, I could have put more effort into the D700 to improve on that performance. But I'm still happy with the D300s. If you don't already have Nikon lenses, I would consider the D90 or D700 first.
