Required for desktop flashes. Build quality is good for them, and at $18 for two, your expectations aren't very high, and they shouldn't be. The foot spray isn't large, so there may be some balance issues when using some of the small softbox modifiers. You may need to put a small sandbag inside to weigh them down. The action is ok and the clasp is ok. If you literally need it as a countertop, they're great for their size. They fit in a shoulder bag for compact shooting and installation with my Canon M mirrorless. A taped wrap on the inner shaft making it slide a little smoother. It's pretty loose, so it needs some tolerance. There has been some discussion of installing a groove and o-ring to see how well they can work with some sort of "air cushioning", but that's for off-hours experimentation and not necessarily lightning. It's just fun to tinker a bit. :) Generally good and they work well as small reflector holders. Recommended for light tasks.
