I think this carrier is best for small, young and obedient pets. As it is "top loading", I had a hard time preventing my cat from jumping out of the carrier when opening the top in the vet's office. Putting it back in place and closing the lid was no less difficult. However, I have had very good luck transporting three 8 week old chicks. The sides are high enough that they couldn't pop out when I opened the top. I didn't use the two pads that came with the carrier, so after transporting the chicks I simply poured some detergent into the floor and hosed down the carrier. There are enough ventilation holes, so there shouldn't be any problems. This stretcher is made from a very hard, durable plastic and I don't think a pet will chew on it so it will likely never need to be replaced due to wear and tear.
