My 5 month old loves this toy. His grip improved as he got older but it was one of the first toys he could hold with his limited abilities when I bought it for him and that's because it's so easy to grab. The sound catches his attention and I'm not sure if he sees the little balls in the middle, but he seems to be looking at them when I move them. They cascade down, which is pretty cool. I liked this toy so much that I gave it to a friend who has a child of the same age.
