I wish I could give this system 10 stars. He is my situation. I have a doberman puppy. (now 8 months). I got him when he was 10 weeks old and wanted to make sure he didn't leave the yard. I have about 1.5 acres and I wanted to make sure he has access to most of my yard so he can run and play. I have had dogs all my adult life and have always used regular fences to keep them in my yard. A new home and other priorities to spend your money on - I decided to give the Yardmax system a try. Also, I live in a very nice "open" area with nice big yards and open spaces. I didn't want to put up a fence unless it was necessary. So installation. As I said, my garden is a decent size, so I took the advice of others and hired a cable layer from the local hardware store. It was a real life saver. I think it was worth $$$ (I think the rent was $75). I would recommend that you choose a day after the rain to soften the ground. I decided to run the wire after weeks of no rain and the ground was rock hard. It was also difficult with the car. Also, as others have recommended, I decided to buy and use a heavier gauge wire than the one that came in the kit. Can't say the wire that came with it doesn't fit, but the one I bought was a lot thicker and stronger. As far as training goes, I ticked the boxes. and started following the system-recommended training plan. Well it took my pup a full 2-3 days to figure out that leaving the yard is not a good idea. He was trained in just 2 days. I think he was shocked twice. the first time it was his fault (he didn't know), and the second time it was mine. I trained him in the yard (sit/stand/come etc.) and he did great. My neighbor across the street called me and I told him to "stay". Well, I was bragging about how well the training was going. and I turned my back on them and talked to them. and he decided to come to me. He climbed over the fence and they started hitting him. I felt awful as he literally jumped into my arms. I pulled the collar off his neck and hurried back into the yard. He was fine, but never left the farm again. I was a little concerned that he wouldn't want to leave the farm when we left. but he knows that when he is on a leash he can walk and leave the yard for our walks without any problems. I play with him. he sees other people / dogs / etc. - and doesn't leave the yard. If the ball goes far, he won't go to pick it up. I'm really amazed at how well this system works. By the way, the collar broke today (it was my fault. The receiver's "ears" broke off. I called PETSAFE support - and even though I knew it was mine broken and out of warranty - they did sent me a replacement for free I am very impressed with the system and the company!
