Review on Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens for SLR Cameras - Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM by Damyanti Negi ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I didnt expect the quality to be so high.

Since 2022, I've been utilizing the lens in my work. When I first started using it, I had a Canon 50D, which made it a good staff lens for most everyday tasks. Now that I have a Canon 5D Mark II and a Canon 1Ds Mark III, however, it has become an excellent landscape lens on a full-frame camera. It does a pretty good job of conveying volume. Sharp at f 5.6 - 8 (I don't advocate covering apertures larger than f11 because no one has yet eliminated the diffraction limit), excellent accurate color reproduction (extremely juicy hues and tones without "gags" like on cheap plastic lenses, minimum post-processing). There is a vignette, but it disappears when the aperture is wide open, and it can be removed quite quickly in post-production as well. There are no issues with focusing, and everything moves quickly and smoothly even if there is no lubricant. The lens block travels along the length of the tube (for 11 years of operation there is no dust inside). The bokeh is pretty, but how you feel about it is a very personal preference. Strongly suggest spending your money on this. Great value for money. It is difficult to find a wide-angle lens that produces a picture that is both as "lively" and as vibrant as this one does for the price. Convenient focus. Excellent and constructive.

Pros
  • - a versatile range of focal lengths; - excellent color reproduction and contrast; - distortion that is foreseeable and can be readily adjusted in post-production software; - being lightweight and little; - a quick focusing speed; - the absence of retractable nodes, with all moving parts housed internally in the tube.
Cons
  • the lens hood is more for physical protection of the lens from accidental impacts than for shooting; - I don't consider low aperture (f / 4) as a strong drawback: this is a wide-angle lens, the lens is designed for shooting landscapes and architecture at apertures from f / 6.3 to 11 to get maximum depth of field, if you want f / 2.8 for shooting in low light - if you please. - the lens hood is more for physical protection of
