without battery best in kitchen and dining room

I ordered it as a gift for chicken lovers. When it arrived the box was damaged and there was no battery in the timer. I found it really weird as I've never bought a timer without a battery. But even if I choose to keep this expensive timer without a battery, it doesn't say anywhere what size battery is needed. The battery compartment looked a bit dirty. So I don't know if someone stole the battery and returned it or if it just lay idle for a long time. However. i give it back
