Slight disappointment

Obviously these are cheap lamps but judging by the pictures I was expecting more light. There were fairly large gaps between the lighted part. Also, I didn't realize they were battery operated and unplugged, which was fine, they just died very quickly. Maybe it was because I used the timer option but 5 hours a day for a month and I had to change the batteries.
