Review on ๐Ÿ’ง Nalgene Stainless Steel Water Bottle by Adam Davidson

Not disappointed but definitely needs cleaning

You always need to clean new containers, and this one is no exception. Like many reviewers, I was trying to decide between this and the 40 oz Kleen Kanteen. The price is more in line with the Kleen Kanteen, but when the Nalgene was a dollar off I decided to stop there. I'm glad I read some of the reviews describing the metallic smell and internal weld. A little sandpaper fixed the seam and a large amount of vinegar got rid of the odor. And I mean A LOT. It is not the metal itself that causes the taste/smell, but the oils and deposits left behind after production. A food-grade acid like vinegar can get in and clean them, but you'll need to use more than you think. Simply bite through the ball and fill the container at least half full with white vinegar. You can dilute it a bit, but I'd leave it fairly concentrated. Keep a bottle close to you throughout the day and shake and turn it over from time to time. The good thing about Nalgene is that it can stand on its own lid - not very strong, but strong enough for the vinegar to seep everywhere. Keep the vinegar in there throughout the day, or at least for a few hours. Wash it again with a good bottle brush and dish soap and you'll be fine. If you are not satisfied with the results, try again. I don't recommend industrial solvents - stick to food grade vinegar! So yeah, I'm deducting a star for the need to grind the weld. Mine didn't look bad though. I still feel better cleaning it.
