Review on Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L UD Aspherical: The Ultimate Tilt-Shift Lens for Canon DSLRs by Anand Gedam ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I am amazed at how well the product is made, just magically!

This lens can be bought after trying a lot, in pursuit of perfection. When gluing together panoramas taken using the shift function, you need to remember about parallax, which can ruin your nerves. Pros below: If you do not use shift or tilt, the quality of the picture is beyond praise in terms of sharpness. Rabbit resistance can be noted: if it catches hares, they are usually small in size and easily removed. But, you always need to monitor the side light, due to the convexity of the lens, there are “enough” light sources that do not fall into the frame, but only give a spurious reflection at the edges of the frame. You can get rid of it using cardboard or stand on the side yourself without getting into the frame. HA is, but not much, if you use progress. Full movement is necessary - 2 axes of rotation, Shift, Tilt - a very flexible tool. Metal body, rubberized joint of the front lens with the body. The color gives a very similar color to the 24mm f1,4 II, which is good news. Along with sharpness, excellent separation of small details in the image by color and texture. There is no distortion. Got cons: There are no shortcomings, but there are, so to speak, design features: - the front lens is outrageously convex - the focus ring is easy to move, you need to constantly monitor - the rear lens is not adjacent to the body, there is a gap around it - there is no way to use filters in a reasonable price range. At maximum shift values +/- 12, so to speak, at absolute edges, sharpness drops and HA appear. Tilt for 17 mm is of little use, you can expand the zone of sharpness, so that everything from the tripod legs to infinity will fall into sharpness, but there are geometry distortions, collapse or blockage, a drop in sharpness at the edges of the frame (strong). What can not be said in the shift function. For the sake of it, they basically take a wide-angle tilt-shift. Light transmission rate is low. If you use the shift - we lose even more.

Different pros: Tilt-shift sharpness wide angle With its cons. The lens is not protected by anything. Price. I still don’t like that you can see the electronics of the lens from the back of the lens - they could cover it with something !
