Review on Kensington Transmitter Auto Charger White by Charles Notti

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Easy to use, decent sound, FM transmitter and charger in one

Firstly, as every published FM transmitter review advises, use a cassette adapter or direct input when You can. But if you're like me (no cassette player, direct input costs more $$ than I'm willing to spend), the Kensington charger/transmitter is a good option (don't know if a digital version ever came out). , but it might be an option). The reception in my car is good and I don't have to worry about moving the iPod since the transmitter is in the adapter. The sound is comparable to a self-mixed CD for AAC files; MP3 files appear to play at a much lower volume, but iTunes easily converts them to AAC. Turning up the volume to listen to MP3s causes distortion (I have to crank the volume to maximum to hear any of it, while playing AAC files at the same volume as the CD player, about half that). Plugging into a dock means you don't benefit from soundcheck (to control volume) or iPod equalization: that's good, since you don't have music that's run through two sets of equalizers (I found this out in a previous car). overly boosted bass and muddy sound). The transmitter doesn't have much trouble transmitting weak stations and it seems to need a decent signal to cause significant interference (although I live in a small town so there aren't many stations to play around with). It's relatively easy to flip switches to another transmitter - you can tell by touch which switch you've flipped and which should be the new transmitter. Looking at the device to see what it is set to is not easy, so I wouldn't recommend looking at it while driving :). On rare occasions I experience intermittent hissing - usually when playing rock songs at high volume (often Static-X is the culprit, find out what it is) - which could be due to outside interference (different song, different day, same section of road, I can't hear any noise). Short review. Pros: Charges the battery. iPod Decent Signal Indicators show device is streaming/charging. The sound quality is similar (if not better than) a home CD mix. Cons: Limited number of stations (8) Treats AAC/MP3 files differently.

Pros
  • Good value for money
Cons
  • Good but not great
