I have used this on two cars with an iPhone XR in a leather case. The clip that holds the air vent is covered with a thick rubber material. The grip strength of this clamp is not adjustable, but seems very reliable, at least with horizontal blades. I place one of the included metal plates between the phone and the case and the phone stays in place as I gently place the phone on the magnet so the metal plate aligns. It's not very durable and I would expect the phone to slip on washboard roads or overspeed on speed bumps. My phone slipped once but I think I didn't carefully align the hidden plate with the magnet. There's a friction-fit ball joint to get the phone where you want it, and it feels just right. For me, the convenience with no fiddling with any spring-loaded devices, the unobtrusive look without a phone, and the ease of switching between vehicles is great. I would buy another one if I lost this one.
