When installing two outlet pipes with my pump below the level of the aquarium, I use two orange connectors to help flow. I connected it in the right direction. One of them worked, I had to remove one because the second hose wasn't venting. When I noticed that one of the hoses wasn't pumping air, I replaced the hose they had plugged in with my own and it still didn't work. When I removed the orange flow connector on the hose that wasn't pumping air, it helped. However, I now have one hose with a flow connector and one without. But the pump works and seems quiet so far.
