My young son and daughter run an explorer club with their grandfather and go on weekly hikes in the woods behind his house to learn about plants and animals. I wanted to encourage nature education with this cute adventure set, but it didn't work out well. All parts are cheap green plastic and only the compass shows any durability. The flashlight broke when my son picked it up - the bottom fell off and we had to glue it back on, but it still looks broken. The binoculars are ok but not very adjustable. Not sure about the whistle as I don't let my 5 and 3 year olds go into the woods alone. The compass is pretty good and they're learning how to use it, but the rest of the set will probably end up in the trash by the end of the year. I've been hesitant to invest in quality explorer gear because they're young and prone to breakage anyway, but this stuff never got a chance so looks like I need to do some more research. I would recommend this set for indoor use only. pretend to play instead of trying to use it in nature.
