Lost in the deserts of southern Peru's coast, a town called Ilo has hundreds of boats owned by artisanal fishermen in its harbor; They invest thousands of dollars (which means a lot in Peru) on deep-sea voyages, voyages that take months. You go, but there is a stake: you, people who have almost nothing, sometimes come back with nothing. Moby Dick was meant to be that kind of story, with even more impact, but any impact it has is undermined by Melville. He writes about Ahab's obsession with the white whale, but that obsession is overshadowed by Melville's own obsession with enlightening the reader with many chapters of biological, medical, historical, and all sorts of obnoxious data about whales. This waters down the story so much that I got to the point of honestly either Captain Ahab (30% of the book's progress) or Moby Dick (85%). it doesn't feel epic like a monster being hunted by an equally monstrous person, instead it seems as ludicrous as a man trying to catch a tiny mouse in his kitchen. If you are a professional writer I would say that this book is fundamental, it has every literary technique I can think of, it is unique not only for its time but also today. One of the parts I liked was the Quakers, which due to the fact that sea creatures have turned into bloody warriors, like the Bible, with such tough people, loneliness, seem strict. Moby Dick is objectively very well written, but subjectively I didn't like it. Another classic American author wrote a story about the testimony of a man who travels to Nantucket from a whaling ship and faces impending horrors, this is Poe's The Story of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. It's not as well written as Moby Dick, but I think it manages to convey what Moby Dick failed to convey: in the Fear of White in both books, this horror occurs at the end of the story, but Poe needs to prepare the reader . Instead of the unreal, Melville gradually transforms the special into something simply rare (in fairness, of course, that may be his goal); in the vastness of the world, the earth in Moby Dick seems quite small, almost navigable, in Poe's story one has the feeling of reaching exotic places; and finally, in the surprising ending, in "Moby Dick" (perhaps because the story is world famous), instead the ending seems to be known from the start. The boring aspect, perhaps because Melville is factually right that there is almost no room for imagination with him. For example, his portrayal of the city of Lima is fairly accurate, but it's a boring city, so the contribution to the story is boring as well. In the end I don't regret reading it, I marked seven different parts which are exciting but overall it didn't work for me. The Revain Classics Edition is very good. It has professional formatting, excellent typography, I didn't find any errors. There is an X-ray which is useful although there is not much of it in this book because everything is explained :S Fortunately the scope of this book is not increased by introduction or lectures. This is only for you to discover.
