Haven't tried general purpose storage bags but have used five or six of them for sous vide. The hand pump feels cheap and quite flimsy. Make sure there is nothing in the bag under the valve opening and that the surface under the bag where the valve is located is level. Press the pump firmly against the valve on the bag. Once you do that, it will work just fine. The pockets are fine, and if the included plastic clasp isn't comfortable, just make sure the entire clasp is on a flat surface and just slide your finger across the band while pressing down. I haven't tried deleting and reusing the packages.
