In my experience these bags (and similar ones from other manufacturers - to be honest they are all very similar) can hold 100% tea - even tiny flakes - inside the bag. Metal brewers are much worse at keeping all the tea in the brewer. For example, if you're brewing a large batch of tea to keep in the fridge for several days (let's say drinking it on ice), then you don't want small bits of tea floating around in the pot and gradually turning the tea bitter. So they have become indispensable for me (I always have large and small ones ready). By the way: I tie the cord with a small knot around the neck of the bag so that the tea stays inside. The lack of a tag at the end of the line makes this easier than if there was a tag, so I'm all for the lack of tags.
