Well, first of all, there is NO reason to clog commercial socks these days! There are many other uses: stuff with herbs and tumble dry; Fill it in with crumpled cellophane, add some catnip and please any cat you give it to - etc. BUT! A home-knit sock deserves a darning if a hole grows into it, and that is a proper darning pad. Just a note: with a darning egg and a darning needle (the curved point makes it even easier) darning a small hole is quite quick and easy and will make your socks or slippers usable again. Highly recommended for knitters and crocheters!
