Great to start with but lids too stink

This is a great kit at a good price to start fermentation. In my case, I wanted to try making small batches of Chinese rice wine and then try my hand at making fruit wine without making a huge investment in equipment. round cardboard storage cylinder with lid - it was a great presentation. The locks are standard and work well, they fit through a hole with a silicone grommet on wide mouth plastic jar lids which is nice and there is also a silicone gasket under the lid so wide mouth jars seal well. The reason I gave this 3 stars is that the plastic lid seemed to absorb much of the odor from the jar's contents, which lingered even after washing. . Although the lid was not in direct contact with the rice and liquid during my first rice wine experiment, after washing with soap and warm water, a distinct smell of yeasty alcohol came out of the lid. I would really hope that lids made for this purpose are not so odor permeable. If it absorbs too much odor, the lid may not be suitable for future use with other food or beverages. While this kit was a steal, the airlocks are standard and can be used in a different configuration if desired. One day you will want to stop using wide mouth lids. For those starting out I would recommend this.
