I have a couple of monitor arms and the problem I have noticed is that due to the weight of the monitor and the way the monitor arms work there is a lot of force being applied to the table where the monitor arm is. attached to the table. This is especially true if the desk you are attaching the monitor arm to is not as stable as it should be. In my case, I attached a monitor arm to an IKEA coffee table. and the top of this coffee table isn't exactly solid. To deal with this situation I used some thin wooden planks to spread the force over a larger area. That's essentially what this metal plate does. My solution with wooden boards works. however, after a while, the wood began to warp due to the force. These metal plates avoid this problem as they are much stronger than wood, albeit thinner. The only problem I see is the price. Considering it's just stamped sheet metal, painted (or maybe powder coated?). I think it's a little expensive. On the other hand, I understand that this is not the most requested product. If your tabletop is strong enough to support the monitor arm, this is not necessary. Last warning. The top plate is quite large. There are measurements given in the description, but sometimes it's difficult to judge the size until you see the product physically. However, the advantage of this size is that it spreads the weight of the monitor arm over a larger area.
